About Pulborough Brooks RSPB Reserve

Pulborough Brooks RSPB Reserve occupies a series of wet meadows and grazing marshes on the floodplain of the River Arun in West Sussex. Spanning approximately 145 hectares (358 acres), it is managed by the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and is famous as one of southern England's prime wetland reserves. The reserve features a network of ditches, reedbeds, and open water pools that attract a broad variety of waterfowl and wading birds. Notable species include Bewick's swans in winter, marsh harriers, bitterns, and snipe, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers year-round. The landscape is relatively flat and features several hides and viewing platforms designed to immerse visitors in observing the abundant wildlife in a minimally intrusive way. Pulborough Brooks also supports important populations of wildflowers and insects, contributing to its biodiversity goals. The reserve sits within the South Downs National Park boundary and has a long history of traditional grazing and floodplain management, which helps maintain its special wetland habitat. Visitors can enjoy walking along well-maintained trails and boardwalks, attend guided walks and educational events, and benefit from seasonal birdwatching hides. Its proximity to the South Downs makes it accessible for combined trips involving countryside hiking or cycling. Pulborough Brooks is a tranquil setting that offers insights into the UK's wetland ecosystems and provides excellent opportunities for wildlife photography, nature study, and peaceful outdoor recreation.
